LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Oklahoma fourth-ranked men's gymnastics team defeated the ninth-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, 226.375-217.825 at the Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb., tonight. With the victory, OU sweeps the season series and has three-straight dual competition victories. In their previous meeting, Oklahoma beat Nebraska, 226.750-222.975, in Norman. OU improved to 7-2 on the season.
The Sooners claimed individual event championships in four events. On the floor exercise, freshman Daniel Furney and senior Brendan O'Neil tied for the top spot with a 9.65. Furney also shared the title on the pommel horse, tying Nebraska's Derek Leiter with a 9.70. OU also earned championships when sophomores David Johnston won the still rings (9.75) and Everette Bierker claimed first on the parallel bars (9.625). The Sooners put the competition away by taking the top five spots on the parallel bars and placing second through fifth on the horizontal bar.
"It was ugly for both teams," said OU interim head coach Mark Williams. "Nebraska has been devastated by injury and was only able to compete four or five on every event. They hung close after three events. We struggled early. A win at Nebraska is always a goal. Competing on the road is different than competing at home and we need to get used to that. We competed without seniors Ed Wentzheimer and Robby Rome, who struggled with shoulder problems this week, and had to rely on less experience. I'm happy to get away without any more injuries."
The Sooners are back in action when they travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., to take on Cal. State-Santa Barbara and top-ranked Michigan. Competition begins at 7 p.m.
