LAFAYETTE, La. - For the second time in three games, the University of Oklahoma baseball team outhit No. 25 Louisiana-Lafayette, but was unable to capture a victory as the Ragin' Cajuns took the final game of the three-games series, 3-2, Sunday afternoon to sweep the Sooners at Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, La. OU starter Austin Mix (2-1) pitched seven innings and surrendered only three hits while striking out a career-high eight batters. ULL starting pitcher Justin Gabriel (2-0) equaled Mix's outstanding pitching effort by working eight innings of seven-hit ball and striking out 12 Sooners.
The Ragin' Cajuns picked up their three runs off of a solo home run by rightfielder Ryan Gill and a two-run shot by first baseman Jess Poche. Held scoreless until the ninth inning, the Sooners mounted a comeback as first baseman Rick Park led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by second baseman Zach Lekse. Lekse eventually came around to score on a groundout by pinch hitter Tim Hooper. However, ULL reliever Aaron Welbourne struck out third baseman Jason Bartlett to close out the game and capture his fourth save of the year and second of the series.
Centerfielder Jerome Godsey and shortstop Tommy Whiteman provided most of the Sooner offense on the afternoon as the duo combined for six of the Sooners' nine hits (each went 3-for-4).
The Sooners, now 6-5 this season, return to action Tuesday against Texas-Arlington at 2 p.m. in Arlington, Texas.
