TUCSON, Ariz. - For the first time since 1993, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team won a tournament, taking top honors at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., today by totaling a 604. Combined with yesterday's 295, today's 309 gave the Sooners a six-stroke advantage over second-place Colorado (610). The Sooners led all teams in par-4 scoring, averaging 4.18 (+18), and pars with 117.
Behind the third-best performance in terms of par-4 scoring (3.95) and birdies (6), freshman Allison Johnson slipped from first to second by shooting a 77 to finish the tournament with a 2-over-par 146. This marks the second top-10 finish in Johnson's career. She placed ninth in November's New Mexico State Invitational. Senior Isabelle Blais finished seventh by shooting back-to-back 75s to finish with a 6-over-par 150. Blais finished fifth in par-5 scoring at 4.75 (-2). Senior Jaime Dello-Russo strung together rounds of 76 and 77 to tie for 13th at 153 (+9). Dello-Russo was one of only four players to record an eagle during the two-day tournament. She also tied for fifth in par-4 scoring with a 4.10 (+2). Sophomore Wendy Martin added a final-round 82 to yesterday's 75 to tie for 26th at 157 (+13). Sophomore Jennifer Tannehill rounded out the list of OU athletes as she collected 25 pars on her way to rounds 78 and 80 to tie for 31st with a 158 (+13).
The Sooners will be back in action March 6-7 as they travel to Houston, Texas, for the GTE Memorial. OU finished second behind Missouri in the tournament last year with a 949.
