Sooners Lead Mountain View Collegiate By Five Strokes

TUCSON, Ariz. - With every member of the University of Oklahoma women's golf team inside the Top 25, the Sooners lead the 12 team field with a 295 after day one at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. Currently ranked 23rd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll the OU is five strokes ahead of Colorado.
Freshman Allison Johnson is first on the leader board after firing an opening round of 69 (-3). This marks the best single round of her career by four strokes and is also the best of any current Sooner athlete. Johnson also becomes the first Sooner since Carolyn Janildo to finish in the 60's. Janildo, who went on to finish fifth, turned in a 69 during the second round of the 1994 NCAA Championships. Senior Isabelle Blais and sophomore Wendy Martin stand in a tie for seventh with two others at a four over par, 75. Senior Jaime Dello-Russo is in a five-way tie for 11th at 76, while sophomore Jennifer Tannehill is tied for 24th with three others. Dello-Russo's 76 ties her career-best, which she has shot on six different occasions.
Sunday the Sooners will be looking to win their first tournament since taking top honors at the Diet Coke/NMSU Invitational in 1993. Action resumes at 7 a.m. (MT) off tees one through 10.
