NORMAN, Okla. - For the second consecutive day, Oklahoma City University's baseball team hand the University of Oklahoma a 5-3 loss at L. Dale Mitchell Park Sunday, sweeping the two-game series. The loss drops Oklahoma to 3-2 on the season, while OCU improves to 2-0.
Trailing the Stars 5-1 after seven, OU mounted a comeback in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, with two outs and runners at the corners for Oklahoma, shortstop Tommy Whiteman drove in second baseman Zach Lekse from third for OU's second run. Continuing to threaten in the ninth inning, Oklahoma pinch hitter Jeremy Vidales moved designated hitter Jeff Bajenaru, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to third base with a single, and Bajenaru proceeded to score on a wild pitch by OCU's closer Doug Riddle. With the tying run at the plate, Riddle struck out catcher Eliot Joyner to end the game.
Oklahoma City jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, before Oklahoma tied it at one in the bottom of the inning on Whiteman's solo home run. Whiteman's home run, which was part of a 4-for-4 afternoon at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs, was his second in as many days.
OCU broke the tie in the fourth inning as they tagged OU starting pitcher Austin Coose (1-1) for two more runs. The Stars picked up their final two runs off OU reliever Jeff Wigington in the sixth inning.
Winning OCU pitcher Frank Halter (1-0) allowed only two runs on seven hits over 7.2 innings of work, while reliever Riddle captured his second save on the year. Oklahoma City pitchers helped their cause by picking off three Sooner baserunners at first.
The Sooners hit the road next weekend to face Sam Houston State, Houston and Oral Roberts in the Houston Tournament in Houston, Texas.
