Freshman Jock Stevens made an immediate impact on the Sooner squad with his stellar debut at the annual Red-White intrasquad, December 3. Stevens amassed the highest all-around total at the Sooners first, unofficial meet.

Stevens, who unveiled new elements on several events, including an impressive 1-1/2, front, double front combination on floor, will be a strong addition to the Sooner's 2001 roster.

"Jock did exactly what he was asked to do and looked great for this time in the season," OU Head Coach Mark Williams said proudly. "He did all of his routines, which have been upgraded to meet the new difficulty standards, and performed with few errors.

"He's going to be our secret weapon on floor and vault. I'm going to ask him to step up like an upperclassman on those two events and compete in the all-around at various times throughout the year."

Williams, who also coached Stevens during his successful junior career, plans to continue to train the 19-year-old for national and international, as well as collegiate events. "He's a former junior national champ in the floor exercise and high bar and we're training him now for February's Winter Cup (US national re-ranking event)," Williams said. "After qualifying to the John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships as a high school senior this past summer, the first year he was eligible to do so as a senior competitor, he looks ready to be a contender for a national team spot."
