NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops, who led the Sooners to a perfect 12-0 mark and a berth in the national title game, has been selected the Football News 2000 Coach of the Year.
Stoops, in his second season at Oklahoma, was selected over fellow Football News finalists Bob Davie of Notre Dame and Lou Holtz of South Carolina.
The Sooners capped their unblemished run through the regular season with a 27-24 victory over Kansas State in the Big 12 championship and are attempting to capture the school's first national title since 1985.
This year's Football News award recipients will be honored on Tuesday, March 6, 20001, at the National Athletic Awards ceremony at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Mich. The ceremony will be nationally televised by FOX Sports Net.
Last year's Football News Coach of the Year was Minnesota's Glen Mason.
