Josh Heupel Named Sporting News Player of the Year for 2000

NORMAN, Okla. - Josh Heupel, the senior quarterback who led Oklahoma far beyond pre-season expectations, has been named The Sporting News College Football Player of the Year for 2000. Heupel, who received the Walter Camp player of the year award, leads the nation in passing percentages (65.8%).
Rocky Calmus, who passed Brian Bosworth's (39) school tackles for losses with 40, received first-team defense honors. Calmus is 10th in the Big 12 Conference's all-time tackles for loss record.
J.T. Thatcher was named first-team defense and second-team specialist while receiving conference player of the year honors four times this season. Thatcher also ranks eighth nationally in punt returns with a 16.4 yard average.
Derrick Strait, who was named to the Freshman All-American team, set an OU freshman pass deflection record with 13 including an endzone break-up against Oklahoma State.
The selections, including All-American teams, were made by editors of The Sporting News, and appear in the December 4 issue of the magazine, on sale, November 29.
Oklahoma and Florida State each provided three players for the first team All-American squad, with Texas and Miami providing two each.
