NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma assistant men's gymnastics coach Guard Young has been named to the senior men's national team and will compete in the Pontiac International Team Meet Nov. 10 in Syracuse, N.Y. The competition will follow a tri-meet format with the U.S. competing against Romania and Olympic team champion China. The meet will be the first competition in the next quadrennium cycle. OU Head Coach Mark Williams will serve as an assistant coach at the meet.
"To make the national team is a great relief," stated Young. "I finished 10th at the (Olympic) trials and at that time they only accepted nine gymnasts to the national team. The MPC, a panel of national coaches, added three gymnasts to the team for a full year and I was fortunate to be selected. It allows me to train full-time and focus for the 2001 World Championships. I'm honored to represent the United States with the dignity and pride it deserves."
"After Guard established himself as a member of the senior national team, it provided the opportunity to compete in an international competition against two teams that were in the Olympic finals," said Williams. "It's an opportunity to measure yourself against the best in the world and Guard's looking forward to the challenge. This will be a stepping stone towards training for the 2001 World Championships."
The Pontiac International Team Meet will be televised at a later date.
