SYRACUSE, N.Y. - University of Oklahoma assistant men's gymnastics coach Guard Young competed in the 2000 Pontiac International Team Championship and helped the United States to a second-place finish with 224.550 points. Romania (225.075) won the meet and Olympic champion China (223.825) placed third. OU Head Coach Mark Williams served as an assistant coach for the competition.
The format of the competition was five competitors per team per event with the four highest scores counting towards the team total. Young competed in five events. His highest placing was in the floor exercise, where he finished fourth with a 9.5. Young also place in the top seven on the pommel horse (sixth-9.5), vault (sixth-9.45) and the parallel bars (seventh-9.25).
"Guard, and the United States team as a whole, competed very well," said Williams. "It was an exciting meet until the end. One of the U.S. gymnasts broke one of the pommels off of the pommel horse so we had to come back and finish that event after the meet and actually came back to pass China. Romania had two Olympians on their team while China and the United States used their second group of gymnasts. It was a good experience."
The event will be televised by NBC on Dec. 17.
