NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma senior quarterback Josh Heupel of Aberdeen, S.D., OU senior linebacker Torrance Marshall of Miami, Fla., and Texas Tech freshman running back-IR-KR Wes Welker of Oklahoma City, Okla., have been chosen SBC Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week (Offense, Defense, Special Teams) by a select panel of media covering Big 12 football for games played on Oct. 28, 2000.
Heupel continued to establish his 2000 Heisman Trophy credentials by leading the Sooners to a 31-14 upset over then-No. 1 Nebraska as he connected on 20-of-34 passes for 300 yards and one touchdown. In the first half the South Dakota native was 15-of-24 for 238 yards as he led OU back from a 14-0 deficit. Heupel also rushed eight times for 46 net yards and had OU's longest run from scrimmage of the day with a 21-yarder.
Marshall collected 12 tackles, including eight unassisted, and he had three tackles for losses of 19 yards. He also had one pass deflection and two sacks for 17 yards while helping the Sooners' defense shut out the Huskers for the final three quarters. Oklahoma limited Nebraska to its fewest points since a 19-0 loss at Arizona State in 1996.
Welker, a true freshman, turned in possibly the best all-around performance this season for a Red Raider. He scored his first rushing touchdown of the season on his lone carry of the game--a 42-yard scoring run. The first-year player also posted personal bests in receptions (five) and receiving yards (72), and he returned his second punt of the season for a touchdown on a 66-yard runback. Welker finished the day with 88 punt return yards on four returns and 69 kickoff runback yards on four returns as he led the Red Raiders against Kansas with 271 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. The Oklahoma resident climbed to 15th nationally with a 14.2 average on punt sorties.
