NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma football team has climbed to No. 3 in the Associated Press top 25 poll and No. 4 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll. The AP ranking is the Sooners' highest since also being ranked third prior to the 1988 Southern California game. Oklahoma received four first-place votes in the writers' poll and one in the coaches' poll.
OU improved to 6-0 on the season, its best start since 1987, after defeating then second-ranked Kansas State, 41-31, in Manhattan, Kan., Saturday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats, as well as Kansas State's 25-game home winning streak. It also gave OU back-to-back victories against top-10 teams for the first time since beating fifth-ranked Nebraska (20-17) and No. 9 Arkansas (42-8) in 1987. The Sooners knocked off Texas, which was ranked 10th in the coaches' poll, 63-14 last Saturday.
The Sooners are idle this week before facing top-ranked Nebraska Oct. 28 in Norman.
