OU Announces 2000 Football Schedule

Norman, Okla. - Just five days after completing their 1999 season at the Independence Bowl, the Oklahoma Sooners are already making plans for next season with the announcement of the 2000 football schedule. The schedule features six home games, four games with 1999 bowl teams and a renewal of the classic conference rivalry with Nebraska.

"We have worked extremely long hours on this schedule trying to make everything fit," said OU Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione. "Scheduling is a real challenge because you want a schedule that is appealing to your fans, but allows your team the opportunity to be successful. I believe that we have been successful on both counts."

The Sooners will begin their second season under Head Coach Bob Stoops with four straight home games for the first time since 1995. The season kicks off with Texas-El Paso on Saturday, Sept. 2. The Miners finished 5-7 overall last season and will be coached by former OU offensive coordinator Gary Nord. The first month of the season will end with home games against Arkansas State, Rice and Kansas.

Oklahoma hits the road for the first time in October with back-to-back contests with Texas in Dallas and Kansas State in Manhattan. Following an open weekend, the Sooners will host longtime conference rival Nebraska for the first time since 1996. Overall, OU's opponents for the month of October recorded a combined 32-6 record in 1999.

The month of November will test the Sooners with three of their final four games of the regular season away from the OU campus. OU will play at Baylor and at Texas A&M before playing its final home game of the year against Texas Tech and former OU offensive coordinator Mike Leach. The 2000 regular season will come to an end when the Sooners travel a few miles north to face Oklahoma State.

"I believe that our schedule will challenge us differently each week," added Stoops. "We are still growing as a team and we need challenges to help us get stronger. Our non-conference schedule will be a good test for us, but playing consecutive games against Texas, Kansas State and Nebraska will give us a true measure of how far we have come."
