NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team opened its 2000 season yesterday and today at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. OU finished the six-team meet in second place behind Nebraska with a score of 222.875.
OU freshman Daniel Furney was a key factor for the Sooners. Furney placed third in the all-around competition (55.675) and tied for first on the horizontal bar (9.70) in the individual finals. He also placed third on the parallel bars (9.425), fourth on the vault (9.400) and fifth on the still rings (9.525).
Gabe Hansen turned in a solid perfomance on the pommel horse, placing third with a score of 9.525. Hansen also placed fifth on the horizontal bar with a 9.225. Sophomore David Johnston placed third on the still rings (9.600) and came in fourth in the floor exercise (8.850).
Robby Rome and Brendan O'Neil also helped Oklahoma with their performances on the vault and the horizontal bar. Rome posted a 9.55 on the horizontal bar for third place while O'Neil tied Furney on the vault (9.40) for fourth place.
All-American Steve Van Etten and freshman Josh Landis tied for second on the pommel horse (9.80) during the team competition, yet failed to place in the top three in the individual finals.
The Sooners will continue their season as they host Ohio State Friday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m.
