OU Men's Gymnastics Team Holds Red and White Scrimmage

NORMAN, Okla. - In preparation for its upcoming season, the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team held a red and white intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at the Sam Viersen Center. The red team came out on top, outscoring the white team 166.35 to 165.85.

"Today was spectacular," said OU team captain Huy Ly. "I think we showed that we are really prepared and excited to put in all the work we can to start the season out strongly."

All-American Steve Van Etten landed a 9.85 on the floor exercise to win the event and placed second on the vault with a 9.50. Gabe Hansen turned in a solid competition, winning the pommel horse (9.50) and the horizontal bar (9.60). Sophomore Ryan Hillyer won the parallel bars with a score of 9.50 and newcomers Daniel Furney and Shannon Carrion each won an event. Furney placed first on the still rings (9.65) and Carrion was first on the vault (9.60).

"We are way ahead of schedule because the guys looked great," said Head Coach Mark Williams. "It was good for them to compete in front of a nice crowd to prepare them for season competition."

Oklahoma, ranked fourth nationally in the pre-season coaches' poll, will begin regular-season competition next weekend, Jan. 21-22, at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
