NORMAN, Okla. - OU enters this weekend's action sporting a 8-1-1 record. So far this season, 13 Sooner grapplers have won at least 10 matches and nine are ranked in the top 20 by Amateur Wrestling News and Intermat. Eight Sooner Wrestlers are ranked in the top 10. OU is outscoring its opponents by an average of 32.5 to 8.1 this season. Oklahoma posted back-to-back 40-plus point duals for the first time since the 1985 season when they defeated Fresno State, 42-4, and Cal Poly, 42-3. In its 10 duals this season, OU has won nine of the 10 matches five times. Last weekend the Sooners went 2-1 at the Lone Star Duals.
Arizona State
Arizona State is currently 3-2 on the season and will face Oklahoma State on Friday before they face the Sooners. In its last dual, ASU upset Cal. State-Bakersfield, 22-18. The Sun Devils will likely compete without the services of No. 11 Michal Kawamura at 125 pounds and seventh ranked Quinn Foster at 149 pounds. ASU is led by 165 pound Steve Blackford (#2 AWN, #4 Intermat). Blackford finished fourth at last year's NCAA Championships and was selected to compete in this year's NWCA All-Star Classic. Oklahoma leads the all-time series 15-12-1 and won last year's meeting 23-6 in Tempe, Ariz.
Last Time Out
The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team, without the service of starters Quantres Bates, Robbie Waller and Brent Boeshans, defeated Northern Illinois, 34-12, and Brown, 37-9, but fell to top-ranked Iowa, 21-12, at the third annual Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. The two wins and one loss moved OU's record to 8-1-1.
Frayer Selected Big 12 Wrestler of the Week
University of Oklahoma sophomore Jared Frayer was selected the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. The 149 pounder went 4-0 last week, pinning two opponents and upseting Iowa's fifth-ranked Mike Zadick. Frayer is now 15-3 on the season and is currently ranked fifth in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News and sixth by Intermat. He is also tied for the team lead in pins with six. Frayer is the first Sooner wrestler to win the award this season. Frayer was also honored as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week once last season.
Lightner, Spates Named to NWCA All-Star Classic
Lightner, the nation's second-ranked 141 pounder and Sooner head Coach Jack Spates have been named to the 2000 NWCA All-Star Classic to be held on Feb. 7. This will be Lightner's second time to compete in the classic. He dropped a 6-4 sudden victory decision to Mark Angle last season.

Head Coach Jack Spates
Entering his seventh season at the helm of the OU wrestling program, Jack Spates' Sooners are once again among the top teams in the nation. This former college national champion and NCAA runner-up is nationally known for taking wrestlers and programs who have experienced minimal success and turning them into champions. Coming to a program with the tradition that the University of Oklahoma has was the kind of challenge Spates had looked for in his career.
In the three years prior to Spates arrival at OU, the Sooners' average finish at the NCAA Championships was 23rd. In his first six years, he has guided his squads to four top-10 finishes, including a sixth-place finish at last season's NCAA Championships.
Spates has developed 18 All-Americans while at OU, including four-time All-American and NCAA Champion John Kading at 190 pounds.
Last season, Spates led OU to an 18-5-1 record, one win shy of the school record set in 1974, the year the Sooners last won a national championship. He also led Oklahoma to its first conference championship since 1986 and the squad earned three individual conference titles for the first time since 1990.
