San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team notched its second win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Wichita State at the Cal Poly Hotel Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif. In front of a crowd of 110 inside Mott Gym, the Sooners defeated the Shockers, 15-8, 12-15, 15-3 and 15-5.
Four OU players recorded double figures in kills, including junior Cathy Cook and sophomore Danielle Cornelius-Bookout, who each posted 19. Cornelius-Bookout has posted 47 kills in OUs two wins. Junior Holly McMillan added 11 kills and a career-high 12 digs, while senior Melissa Christman finished with 12 kills and a career-high seven block assists. Junior setter Carolyn Kittell added 58 assists.
Our passing, hitting and blocking was much better in this game, Head Coach Miles Pabst said. But we will have to step it up in tonights match (against Cal Poly). We were tight in the first game, but we played well the rest of the match, especially at the end. If we can play up to our ability tonight, we should win, but it will be tough. This tournament has been a good learning tool for this team.
The Sooners used a .354 hitting percentage en route to the victory, including a .520 percentage in the third game and a .519 percentage in the final game. The Shockers, who were led by Sarah Larsons 19 kills, finished with a .238 hitting percentage. The loss dropped Wichita State to 0-2 in the tourney and 0-3 overall.
OU will play its final match of the tournament tonight at 9 p.m. CT against host school Cal Poly. Both teams are undefeated in the tournament with 2-0 records. The Mustangs defeated San Francisco, 3-0, earlier today. San Francisco and Wichita State, who are both 0-2 in the tournament, will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The Sooners will start their home schedule next weekend with the Sooner Invitational, Sept. 10-11. OU will open the four-team tournament against Arkansas-Little Rock at 8 p.m. Friday. The Sooners will play two matches on Saturday against Wichita State and Wyoming at noon and 5 p.m., respectively.
