Heupel Captures Second Straight Southwestern Bell Fans' Choice Big 12 Player Of The Week Award

DALLAS-- Only four weeks into the 1999 season, Big 12 fans voting via the Internet already have selected a repeat winner of the Southwestern Bell Fans' Choice Big 12 Player of the Week Award. University of Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel captured the honor for the second consecutive week after leading the Sooners to a 41-10 victory over Baylor Sept. 18. As a result, Southwestern Bell will donate another $500 to OU's general scholarship fund.

Heupel threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns, breaking his own single-game record for Oklahoma passing yards established a week earlier against Indiana State. The junior college transfer also set school records for passes completed (37), attempted (54) and total offense yards (397).

Heupel dominated fan voting for a second consecutive week thanks in part to a strong contingent of Internet voters from Oklahoma. Since the Fans' Choice program began, OU players have received nearly 50 percent of all electronic votes. Other Southwestern Bell Fans' Choice Big 12 Player of the Week winners include Texas quarterback Major Applewhite and University of Kansas defensive end Justin Sands.

Southwestern Bell will donate $500 to the general scholarship fund of the university represented by each Southwestern Bell Fans' Choice Big 12 Player of the Week. Fans may select the player each week by casting votes on the Internet (www.swbellfanschoice.com or www.big12sports.com). Each Internet vote automatically qualifies participants with the opportunity to win Big 12 merchandise and trips to the Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl, Nokia Sugar Bowl and Sylvania Alamo Bowl.
