OU Opens Season With Best-Ever Big 12 Preview Showing

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team closed out its first tournament of the 1999 fall season today in Lincoln, Neb., by placing third at the Big 12 Preview with a total of 916 strokes. The finish was marked its best effort at the tournament, topping its fourth-place showing last season. Combining yesterday's two-round total of 618 with today's single-round 298, the Sooners finished 52 strokes above par, 10 shots off the pace set by host Nebraska (906) and just one behind second-place Oklahoma State (915). As a team, OU sank 153 pars, second only to Oklahoma State's 160.
Behind 35 pars, senior Isabelle Blais continued her streak of finishing as OU's top scorer with a third-place total of 222 (75-74-73). After stringing together two rounds of 78 yesterday, sophomore Wendy Martin tied for 11th with a final-round 74 (230 total) as she led all competitors in par-five scoring with an average of 4.67. Sophomore Jennifer Tannehill completed the list of Sooner golfers with top-20 finishes as she tied her stroke total of last season's tournament, 213 (79-74-78), to place in an eight-way tie for 15th. Tannehill was one of eight athletes and was the only Sooner to turn in an eagle during the 54 holes of competition. Sophomore Jennifer James posted a score of 237 to tie for 32nd as she shot 237 (82-78-77), a total which included 32 pars. Freshman Allison Johnson turned in a 74 today, her lowest round of the tournament, and tied for 34th with a total of 238 (83-81-74).
Oklahoma will be back in action Sept. 23-25 when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to participate in the Dick McGuire Invitational.
