OU Reaches Goal in Football Season Ticket Sales

Norman, Okla. - University of Oklahoma Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced this afternoon that OU has reached its goal of selling 50,000 season tickets for the 1999 football season. With 50,792 season tickets sold to date, it's the first time since 1992 that season ticket sales in Norman have topped the 50,000 mark.

"We're extremely happy that we've reached our initial goal of 50,000," said Castiglione. "By no means though do we want to stop here. I think that our supporters have seen the improvements in our football team and feel the excitement building. It speaks volumes about a football program when times have been tough and fans still believe and support the team."

Between 1982 and 1988, the number of season tickets sold at Memorial Stadium averaged 62,900, including season tickets sales of 63,960 (1982), 63,611 (1983), 63,472 (1986) and 63,267 (1988). Since 1988 though, OU season ticket sales have steadily decreased to a low of 44,039 in August of last year.

"I think there are many reasons why we have seen an increase in season ticket sales this season," added Castiglione. "However, I believe one of the largest reasons is that our fans are beginning to see the benefits of being a season ticket holder. With the high demand for single-game tickets to contests like Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, almost the only way to guarantee a seat in the stands is to be a season ticket holder."

Season tickets for the 1999 season will continue to be sold at the OU ticket office until the season opener against Indiana State next Saturday night. For further information call (405) 325-2424 or (800) 456-4668.
