Norman, Okla. - An estimated crowd of 27,000 was inside Oklahoma's Memorial Stadium for the first fall scrimmage under first-year head coach Bob Stoops. With three weeks until the season opener against Indiana State, the Sooners used the two-hour scrimmage to display their new passing offense and worked extensively on special teams.
"I really felt good about what we did tonight," said Stoops following the scrimmage. "I thought our guys continued to play hard even though we are at the end of a very long week of two-a-days. I loved their attitude. I thought that our offense could have done more tonight because during the week they really worked well in drills. I also wasn't surprised that the defense didn't really make many plays. They had a lot of things thrown at them this week and this was the first time they had the chance to see things at full speed."
The OU offense was led by quarterback Josh Heupel who connected on 13 of 20 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown. His 46-yard TD strike came when defensive back J.T. Thatcher deflected Heupel's pass into the hands of receiver Jarrail Jackson. Jackson ended the night with three receptions for 64 yards to lead all receivers.
The Sooners' next scrimmage will be on Saturday, Aug. 28, in Tulsa to benefit victims of the May 3 tornadoes. The scrimmage will be held at Tulsa's Memorial High School at 3:30 p.m.
