Norman, Okla. - Ray Hayward has been named assistant baseball coach at the University of Oklahoma, announced Head Coach Larry Cochell today. Hayward replaces Jackson Todd, who resigned earlier this summer after assisting for three years, and will serve as pitching coach for the program.

A first-team All-American at OU in 1983, Hayward was drafted in the first round of the baseball draft that year by the San Diego Padres. He was the first player in Big Eight conference history to make the all-conference team at two positions in the same year, being chosen as both a pitcher and as a designated hitter in 1983. He was also a first team all-league selection in 1981.

Hayward pitched in both the San Diego and Texas organizations and also spent time with the minor league Oklahoma City 89ers. For the past few years, he has been a scout for the Detroit Tigers.

Hayward, his wife Jeannie, and their three children reside in Oklahoma City.
