NORMAN, Okla. - Three members of the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team were honored when The College Gymnastics Association announced its 1999 list of All-America scholar athletes for men's gymnastics. To receive the award gymnasts must have earned a 3.50 grade point average while attaining a minimum NCAA scoring average of 8.5 during the 1998-99 academic year. The OU gymnasts who were honored were David Johnston, Ryan Hillyer and Jake Moran.
Johnston, a freshman last year, earned a grade point average of 3.57 while majoring in business. Johnston was a big contributor to the Sooner squad as he competed in every meet last season. He placed 13th on the still rings with a season-high 9.45 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships and placed third on the horizontal bar (9.10) against Air Force. Hillyer, also a freshman last year, earned a 3.56 grade point average as a business major. Hillyer competed in every meet for Oklahoma last year and placed fifth on the parallel bars (9.45) at the MPSF Championships. Moran, a sophomore, had a grade point average of 3.50 in management information systems. He competed on the pommel horse for the Sooners and posted a season-high 9.50 at the conference championships.
