Sooner Women Place 3rd in the Big 12 Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics team earned a third-place spot behind Nebraska (196.750) and Iowa State (195.650) in the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., tonight. The Sooners' Amber McCracken was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year for her success in the all-around this season. OU boasts its second Big 12 Gymnast of the Year in two years as Ginger Russell was the winner in 1998.
All three of the Sooners' all-arounders (Amber McCracken, Ginger Russell and Marianna Goncalves) were named to the All-Conference Team.
McCracken tied for third in the all-around with a 39.225, her third highest score of the season. McCracken earned the first-place title on the bars with a 9.875 and placed fourth on the vault and sixth on the floor with twin scores of 9.850. The junior won the Big 12 Gymnast-of-the-Week award three times this season.
Ginger Russell tied for sixth in the all-around with a 39.100. The junior placed second on the floor with a 9.900 and fourth on the beam with a 9.900.
Freshman Marianna Goncalves posted a third-place finish on the bars with
a 9.850 and placed sixth on the vault with a 9.850.
The Championships will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest on April 1
at 3 p.m. and April 3 at 6 p.m. with John Nabor doing play-by-play and
Kathy Johnson providing analysis.
The Sooners advance to the Midwest Regionals onApril 10 in Lincoln, Neb. OU will face conference rival Nebraska, Illinois-Chicago and two other top-12 teams that are still undetermined.
