Women's Gymnasts Place 4th at Midwest Regional

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Oklahoma women's gymnastics team earned a fourth-place spot at the Midwest Regional in Lincoln, Neb., tonight. Oklahoma (193.225) fell to first-place Michigan (196.750), conference rival Nebraska (196.325) and Arizona (193.625). Oklahoma edged Illinois (193.100) and Illinois-Chicago (192.400). Oklahoma's 193.225 was its lowest team score since it last competed in Lincoln, Neb., on Feb. 5 (193.075).

Mariana Goncalves was the top finisher for OU in the all-around. The freshman placed sixth with a 38.700. Goncalves, the most consistent Sooner bars performer, registered an eighth-place finish in the event with a 9.775. She placed 20th on the balance beam with a 9.750.

Amber McCracken, Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, scored a 38.525 for ninth place in the all-around. McCracken, the sixth-ranked vaulter in the country, posted a 12th-place finish in the event with a 9.775. Teammate Malia Carr tied McCracken for the 12th-place vault finish.

Ginger Russell tied with teammate Shanna Sanders for 14th on the uneven bars. The juniors posted twin scores of 9.725.

Senior Kari Ellis earned the highest finish for OU on the beam. She registered an eighth-place performance with a score of 9.825. Michigan and Nebraska qualified for the NCAA Championships April 23-24 in Salt Lake City, Utah. No individual Sooners qualified for national.
