NORMAN, Okla. - Mark Williams, assistant coach of the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, will serve as head coach for the USA men's gymnastics team at the Pan American Games to be held July 23-Aug. 8 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Gymnastics is one of 37 athletic competitions to be held at the Pan American Games, with 742 athletes expected to take part.

"It's an honor to be a representative of USA Gymnastics," said Williams. "After we choose the team in June we expect to be very competitive against our top rivals in the competition: Cuba and Canada. We expect to bring home a half-dozen medals."

Williams served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and was voted 1994 USA Coach of the Year and 1994 Assistant Coach of the Year at the NCAA Championships. He serves as vice president for the U.S. Men's Elite Coaches Association and is a member of the Men's Program Committee for USA Gymnastics. Williams represents the Elite Coaches Association on the U.S. Gymnastics Board of Directors.

A University of Nebraska graduate, Williams was an All-American for the 1978 Husker squad. Williams has been an assistant at OU for 11 years and also coaches at Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman.
