NORMAN, Okla. - Phylesha Whaley scored 24 points and led a balanced attack for the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team that saw all five starters score in double figures en route to a 93-70 victory over Tulsa Monday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in the final game of the Bertha Teague Classic in Norman.
Power forward Caton Hill (Ada, Okla.) nearly pulled off a triple-double, scoring career highs 18 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals. Hill, who was named to her first all-tournament team, also shot 73 percent from the field, hitting eight of 11 attempted shots.
LaNeishea Caufield, also a native of Ada, Okla., produced 15 points, had four steals and shot 90 percent from the free throw line hitting 9-10 shots. Caufield was one of three Sooners voted to the six-member Bertha Teague Classic All-Tournament team.
Earning her second start of the season, junior Sunny Hardeman (Norman, Okla.) scored a season high 14 points and nail 50 percent of her shots behind the three-point line (3-6). The 5-5 guard also matched her career high in assists with six and rebounds with five.
Sophomore point guard Stacey Dales also had a solid performance for the Sooners as she scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out nine assists in 32 minutes of action.
The Sooners also dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Golden Hurricane, 43-20.
The Sooners raced out to a 14-2 lead to begin the game and capture a lead they would never relinquish. Hill contributed a strong first half effort to trigger OU by recording 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals before intermission. Whaley, preseason All-American and tournament Most Valuable Player, also added 13 points to the first half effort.
After OU opened up a 56-37 second half lead, Tulsa used a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 58-49 with 13:51 left in the game. OU regained control of the game by nailing four three-pointers and sinking 10-of-14 free throws in the final period.
All-tournament selection Kasie Pittman led Tulsa with 17 points, while Tammy Goyne added 16 points and nine assists to pace the Golden Hurricane. Emily Stagner came off the bench to contribute 13 points.
Oklahoma returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 2, against Sam Houston State at the Lloyd Noble Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
