HONOLULU, Hawaii - The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team opened the 1999-2000 season with a loss to 24th-ranked Arizona, 75-59, in the opening game of the Hawaiian Regent Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Cats used a 23-7 run to open the second half and take control of the game. Arizona's Elizabeth Pickney led all scores with 22 points, followed by Oklahoma's Stacey Dales' 19 points and Phylesha Whaley's 17 points and 11 rebounds. Whaley was the only player to record a double double on the evening in 40 minutes of action.

Also scoring in double digits was UA's Tatum Brown, 12, and Monika Crank, 11

In the first half, Oklahoma tied the game five times and took the advantage seven times. Dales recorded 11 of her 19 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Sooners also had two post players (Desiree Taylor and Caton Hill) charged with three personal fouls.

Arizona nailed 50 percent of its shots behind the three-point (6-12) line and field (26-52). The Cats also hit 54.8 percent from the free throw line (17-31).

Oklahoma shot 36.1 from the field (22-61), 20.0 percent from behind the arch (4-20) and 52.4 percent (11-21) from the charity stripe. Arizona edged the Sooners on the boards, 41-39 and forced OU to commit 19 turnovers to the Cats' 17.

Oklahoma continues tournament action Saturday with a 3 p.m. (HST) game against host Hawaii.
