Sooner Women's Golf Team Inks Top Canadian Junior

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team landed its first commitment of the 1999 recruiting season with the signing of Montreal, Canada native Lisa Meldrum today.

During the summer of 1999 Meldrum won the Quebec Junior Championships with rounds of 69-74-74 (217). At the Candian Junior Championship, held in Edmonton, she turned in a fourth place finish, 75-75-72 (222). The three round total was the best of any athlete in the 17 and under division. Meldrum earned third place honors at the Canadian Ladies Amateur Championships in Calgary, with a four round total of 293. She also competed in the Women's Western Championships held in Warsaw, Ind. where she shot a qualifying round of 75 in order to advance to the semi-finals.

"She will make an impact immediately because she already has a lot of competition under her belt," said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. "She has been playing a lot of different sports which helped her become a competitor. She has a great attitude and is coachable, she wants to get better and turn pro and this is where she decided to come in order to get there."

Meldrum will become one of four Canadians to have signed with the Sooners in the past decade. The first of which, Marie Desbiens is currently in her sixth year as Oklahoma's assistant coach.

"Marie Desbiens had a little to do with my coming to OU, you see how she has done so you know what can happen," said Meldrum. "I also chose OU because it is so well known academically and for golf. The practice facility and coaches are great, it will be a great place for me to get to the next level."
