NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team earned its second Big 12 conference victory of the year tonight as it defeated Iowa State 15-3, 15-5, 15-12. The win marked OU's first in its last nine outings and improved the Sooners' record to 7-14 overall and 2-9 in league action. Iowa State's loss, its 15th straight, dropped the Cyclones to 2-16 overall and 0-11 in Big 12 play.
In game one, OU jumped out to a 2-0 lead before ISU earned its first point of the night. Then the Sooners reeled off 11 unanswered points to make it 13-1 before the Cyclones regained the serve and added two to their total. Game two proved to be more of the same. After falling behind 3-0, OU managed 10 straight points before Iowa State scored what would be its final point of the game as OU won 15-4. The final game saw three lead changes and four ties before Oklahoma prevailed 15-12.
"It's always good to get a win," said head coach Miles Pabst. "We had to fight through the third and I was concerned about our serving all night, but winning breeds confidence and hopefully we will get some out of this. In the third game we just waited for them to give us something, which is what we've been doing all season, and then we finally took charge."
Leading the way for the Sooners were sophomore Chantae Weathers and junior Carolyn Kittell. Weathers registered 19 kills to pace OU, while Kittell led the team in assists with 59.
"Carolyn, Danielle Cornelius-Bookout and Chantae all did a nice job for us tonight," said Pabst. "Every time we play, Chantae is getting better and better which is all you can ask. Moving Danielle back to the middle is something that we were concerned about at first because of her injury, but it has proven to be successful."
OU returns to the court Saturday as it travels to the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo., to face the 20th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes. Start time is set for 7 p.m. (MT).
