Professor Steve Gensler was appointed OU Athletics FAR in September 2024. He joined the faculty of the College of Law in 2000. He is the Edwards Family Chair in Law, and holds a David L. Boren Professorship and Presidential Professorship from OU. In 2021, he received the Regents’ Award for Superior Teaching.  At the College of Law, in addition to his teaching duties he has served as the Associate Dean for Academics and as the Associate Dean for Scholarship. In 2003-2004, Professor Gensler served as a Supreme Court Fellow with the United States Supreme Court.
 
Professor Gensler’s teaching and scholarship focus on federal-court jurisdiction and procedure. Since 2007, he has been the author of a leading treatise for judges and practicing attorneys on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. He is also a co-author of leading textbooks for the first-year course on Civil Procedure and for the upper-level advanced course on Federal Courts. From 2005-2011, Professor Gensler was a member of the United States Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Civil Rules, which is the committee within the federal judiciary that proposes changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. He currently serves as the academic consultant to the United States Judicial Conference Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction, which is the committee within the federal judiciary that studies developments in federal jurisdiction and suggests amendments to the federal statutes that govern the subject-matter jurisdiction and venue of the federal courts.  Since 2015, Professor Gensler has served on the governing council of the American Law Institute, the entity that produces the influential Restatements of the Law that have guided the development of the law in the state and federal courts for over a century.
 
Since 1991, Professor Gensler has been married to Sonia Gensler, author of several young adult novels (Knopf division of Random House Publishing) and former English teacher at Norman North High School. 
 
Professor Gensler was born in Rockford, Illinois and grew up in the small town of Woodstock, Illinois.  He holds his B.S. in Biology (1988) and his J.D. (1992) from the University of Illinois.
