Aaron Heishman is entering his first year as the Assistant Director of Basketball Performance and a Sport Scientist at OU. Heishman’s primary responsibilities include designing and implementing training programs for the women’s basketball team, as well as men’s tennis. Additionally, he works to coordinate the development of sport science throughout the university.
Heishman came to OU in 2016 to pursue a PhD in Exercise Physiology and is now working on obtaining a second master’s degree in Sports Data Analytics. Upon his arrival, Heishman served as a performance science intern working with OU’s men’s and women’s basketball programs. Heishman facilitated the sports science initiative towards optimizing athlete performance and mitigating injury risk, while assisting in all aspects of the physical development, training and monitoring of athletes.
As a scientist, Heishman plans to bridge the gap between applied athlete performance and laboratory-based research. His primary research interests have centered around athlete monitoring strategies used to evaluate acute readiness and fatigue, as well as enhancing neuromuscular performance. Additionally, since his arrival at OU, Heishman has been an active member of the Neuromuscular Laboratory in the Department of Health and Exercise Science.
Prior to Oklahoma, Heishman served as the graduate assistant for basketball strength and performance at the University of Virginia, where he supported the execution of performance training programs, as well as the implementation of athlete monitoring strategies for both men’s and women’s basketball. During his program, he earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology in 2016.
Originally from Mount Jackson, Va., Heishman graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Animal and Poultry Science and a minor in agricultural economics. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, while also certified in Functional Movement Systems (FMS), Reflexive Performance Reset-Level 2 (RPR-2), and a Certified Sports Performance Coach through USA-Weightlifting.
