Hired by head coach Lon Kruger in June 2019, Pooh Williamson enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Sooners.
Born and raised in Beggs, Okla., Williamson brings over two decades of coaching experience to Norman, including eight seasons in the Big 12. He has spent 15 of his last 18 seasons coaching and recruiting for colleges in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas.
Williamson joins the Sooners after one season at Miami. Prior to his time with the Hurricanes, he spent the previous five seasons under Tubby Smith at Texas Tech (2013-16) and Memphis (2016-18).
As a player, Williamson was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Tulsa under Smith and helped lead the Golden Hurricane in back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 1994 and 1995. He earned both All-MVC First-Team and All-MVC Defensive-Team accolades.
After beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Washington State (1996-98) and Illinois State (1998-2000), Williamson returned to his alma mater from 2001-05 and served as the interim head coach in the 2004-05 season.
Williamson has also coached as an assistant at Wichita State (2005-07), Texas A&M (2007-11), SMU (2011-12) and TCU (2012-13). Throughout his career, he has been on the staff of eight NCAA Tournament teams.
He lives in Norman with his wife, Rosemary, and sons Jamal and Josh.
