Sophomore Leslie Dunlap posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark to win the J.D. Martin Invitational.

Feb. 2, 2002

NORMAN, Okla. - It seems fitting that a meet named to honor the University of Oklahoma's first pole vault All-American and long-time Sooner coach would be dominated by performances by the vaulters. At least, it seemed that way to a trio of Sooner vaulters and their competitors at Saturday's J.D. Martin Invitational.

Sophomore Leslie Dunlap got the action going by posting an all-time Big 12 best in the pole vault with a 13-5.75. The mark is an automatic NCAA qualifier for the 2002 NCAA Championships to be held March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark., the first time this season for her to hit an automatic. It also is a meet record and a new school record, breaking the record that Dunlap set earlier this season. It also marked the fifth time in five indoor meets this season for Dunlap to clear an NCAA provisional or automatic mark.

Her mark, though, proved to be just the start. The second-place finisher for the women, Melissa Pundt of Southwest Texas, got an NCAA provisional mark.

Then the men moved to center stage on the vault runway and it took an NCAA provisional mark just to finish in the top eight of the competition. OU senior Michael McNamara won the meet on fewer misses with a 17-10.5. OU junior Michael Westlund was second, also with a 17-10.5, as the pair duelled at the final height 18-2.5 before each missed all three attempts. That mark would have been an NCAA automatic height and would have set an OU school record. OU freshman Austin Landreth finished eighth with a 17-0.75 to be the final qualifier from the pole vault.

In all, there were two NCAA automatic marks and 10 NCAA provisional marks met in the meet. A total of 13 meet records also fell.

A pair of Sooners, Moses Washington in the 600 and Aldwynn Sappleton in the 800, each won their event in meet record time, then joined Raoul Harvey and Ernest Lewis on the winning mile relay which claimed a meet record. Another Sooner, L'eron George, won the 200 in meet record time, improving a mark he set last year.

The Sooners werent't the only ones getting into the qualifying mode. Texas-Arlington shot putter Ashley Dorsey won the meet with an automatic NCAA qualifying mark of 54-8, her fifth of the competition. With one effort thrown out because of a foot fault, Dorsey beat the NCAA automatic mark in each of her five legal efforts.

OU will travel to Iowa State next weekend for the two-day ISU Invitational before returning to Norman to host the final indoor meet of the 2002 season, the Sooner Indoor, on Feb. 16.
