NORMAN, Okla. -
A pair of Sooner freshmen will head to Manhattan, Kan., for Saturday's Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon, to be hosted by Kansas State. Freshmen Dan Strong of Enid and Veronica Claybourne of Spiro left Friday for their first collegiate multi-event competition. Co-head coach Jill Lancaster, a former multi-event award winner, traveled with the duo.
The Schedule
Both will compete in the five-event pentathlon. The men will start at 10 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles. The remaining events include the long jump, shot put, high jump and 1000. The women will open at 10:30 a.m. with the 60 hurdles. The remaining events for the women will include the high jump, shot put, long jump and 800.
Last Year
OU senior Justin Conkling won the men's title and junior Taylor Cates, who was competing unattached while sitting out a year as a transfer, won the women's title. Freshman Mary Waytula finished fourth.
Conkling won the title by 93 points, finishing with 3,898 points. Cates scored 3,375 points to win by 60 while Waytula finished with 3,103 points.
The Last Time Out
Sooner freshman Jason Stanley ran a 7.88 in the final of the 60-meter hurdles to win the event in his first collegiate action last Saturday at the All Comers Meet at the Mosier Indoor Facility. The time met the NCAA provisional mark and tied a school record set last season by Joey Scott.
One automatic and nine provisional marks were met in the meet. The meet marked the first date that qualifying marks for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championship could be posted.
Other Sooners to post NCAA provisional marks included Leslie Dunlap and Mike McNamara in the pole vault. Dunlap, who cleared 12-6.25 with fewer misses, won the women's pole vault title. Former Sooner LaBoris Bean, now running for the Pioneer Track Club, won the 400-meter dash with a 48.49.
This Year's Team
The Sooners will be a building team during the 2001-02 indoor season but there is plenty of talent to build around. While OU lost Big 12 champions Janel Hayes (long jump) and Justin Conkling (heptathlon), junior Michael Westlund is back to defend his 2001 conference title in the pole vault. The Sooner women tied for sixth at the Big 12 Indoor in '01 while the men were eighth.
Other top returnees (and their Big 12 finish) include Leslie Dunlap, who finished third in the pole vault; Raoul Harvey, sixth in the 400; LaKisha Robinson fourth in the 600-yard run; Aisha Stringer, seventh in the 800 meter; and Sand
