NORMAN, Okla. -
Several Sooner pole vaulters will return to action this weekend in the 2002 Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. This marks the first competitive action for the Sooners since the OU All Comers Meet on Dec. 1. The Summit draws more than 1,000 vaulters from all over the U.S. and features eight competition divisions and workshops led by the country's foremost vault coaches.
Making The Trip
OU vault coach Tom Williams is taking seven Sooner vaulters to the meet and Sooner volunteer assistant Kurt Hanna will compete in the elite division of the meet Friday night. The rest of the Sooner contingent will compete on Saturday. Vaulting for the women will be sophomore Leslie Dunlap, freshman Lindsey Bourne and redshirt freshman Jamie Lillie. In action for the OU men are junior Mikael Westlund, senior Michael McNamara, senior Brett Corlett and junior Robin Hanna. All divisions except the master's and elite divisions will begin competition at 8 a.m. (PT) with action continuing through 10 p.m. (PT).
Last Year
Four Sooner pole vaulters headed to Reno, Nev., for the Reno Summit. Michael Westlund finished third in the college elite division with an NCAA provisional effort of 17-6.50. Leslie Dunlap was 11th in the women's collegiate division with an 11-3.75 while Lindsay Harris finished 14th with an 11-3.75. Brett Corlett recorded no height in the competition.
The Last Time Out I
Sooner freshmen Dan Strong and Veronica Clayborne finished ninth in the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon Dec. 8. The meet marked the first time for either to compete in the five-event pentathlon.
Strong finished with 3,079 points. He picked up the most points in the high jump (6-4.75/758) and in the 1000 (2:59.06/673).
Clayborne finished with 2,842 points. She picked up 724 points in the high jump with her 5-2.50 effort and 692 points in the 60 hurdles with her 10.11.
A relatively new event for men, Strong's total ranks second all-time for OU. Clayborne's total places her eighth on the all-time women's list.
The Last Time Out II
Sooner freshman Jason Stanley ran a 7.88 in the final of the 60-meter hurdles to win the event in his first collegiate action at the All Comers Meet at the Mosier Indoor Facility Dec. 1. The time met the NCAA provisional mark and tied a school record set last season by Joey Scott.
Other Sooners to post NCAA provisional marks included Leslie Dunlap and Mike McNamara in the pole vault. Dunlap, who cleared 12-6.25 with fewer misses, won the women's pole vault title.
Big 12 Athlete of the Week
Sooner Jason Stanley, a freshman hurdler from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was named Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 7 for his performance in OU's season-opening meet on Dec. 1.
Stanley tied the school record and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 60-meter hurdles in the OU All Comers Meet in December. His time of 6.88 currently is the fourth fastest time in the nation and he is the only freshman listed among the top hurdle times to date.
This Year's Team
The Sooners will be a building team during the 2001-02 indoor season but there is plenty of talent to build around. While OU lost Big 12 champions Janel Hayes (long jump) and Justin Conkling (heptathlon), junior Michael Westlund is back to defend his 2001 conference title in the pole vault. The Sooner women tied for sixth at the Big 12 Indoor in '01 while the men were eighth.
Other top returnees (and their Big 12 finish) include Leslie Dunlap, who finished third in the pole vault; Raoul Harvey, sixth in the 400; LaKisha Robinson, fourth in the 600-yard run; Aisha Stringer, seventh in the 800 meter; and Sand
