For nearly 25 years, the Lloyd Noble Center has been home to OU's basketball programs
and has served as a major state multi-purpose facility. The $16.8 million addition and renovation project will add exciting new basketball facilities and upgrade the existing facility. We will bring more details and drawings to you as we receive them.
Listed below are a number of fan amenities intended to make your game day experience more enjoyable:
Seating Improvements
Please note, seating changes and improvements will not occur until after the 2000-01 basketball season.
However, modifications to the lower seating bowl in the Lloyd Noble Center are scheduled to be completed for the 2001-02 basketball season. These modifications will increase the flexibility of the arena at the court level for basketball games, practices and other athletic events utilizing the arena. The new seating arrangement will provide an intimate feel and a greater number of seats on the sidelines, with all seats geometrically oriented to the court, when configured for a basketball game. The modified seating arrangement will provide 500 additional lower level, court-side seating opportunities and an estimated building seating capacity of 12,000.
The Sooner Club staff is awaiting the final seating manifestation and will then begin working to keep you updated and informed of any changes and opportunities as they pertain to your basketball tickets. Please remember there will be no changes to your seat location for the upcoming basketball season.
Disability Seating Improvements
Significant seating improvements for patrons with disabilities also will be included in the construction project to begin following the 2000-01 basketball season.
Four new major disability seating areas will be constructed at locations adjacent to the lower concourse of Lloyd Noble Center at the north, east, south and west sides. These seating areas will provide seating for a minimum of 36 patrons with disabilities and a companion to attend events in the Lloyd Noble Center. The configuration of the new disability seating will be such that patrons standing in front of these seating areas will no longer obstruct the view of those patrons seated in the disability seating sections.
In conjunction with these new disability seating area improvements, the existing Lloyd Noble Center elevator cab, equipment and controls will be replaced with a brand-new, faster elevator cab, equipment and controls to improve the accessibility for those patrons with disabilities seeking access to various levels of the building.
Ceiling and Lighting Improvements
Changes scheduled to take place above the existing arena will be designed to provide greater flexibility and capacity for special lighting relating to basketball games, concerts, and other events, as well as provide a livelier acoustical atmosphere for basketball games in the Lloyd Noble Center.
These improvements, scheduled to begin following the 2000-01 basketball season, include removing the current worn suspended ceiling over the main arena floor, installing a nicer, more contemporary-looking ceiling and brighter event lighting. Several void areas are included in the new ceiling system to provide smoke exhaust openings required by modern fire and life safety codes. At these areas, the exposed structure above will be painted to compliment the balance of the new ceiling design. This design is used by modern multi-purpose facilities because it allows for rapid transitions between Friday night concerts and Saturday afternoon basketball game set-ups.
Concession Stands and Restroom Improvements
For your convenience, an additional concession stand and pair of restrooms will be constructed at the south end of the renovated Lloyd Noble Center. This construction will begin following the 2000-01 basketball season.
South Entrance Improvement
To provide you with greater access to the Lloyd Noble Center, a new public lower south entrance will be constructed following the 2000-01 basketball season. In addition, the upper south entrance will also be renovated. These entrances will provide you access to the Tip In Club Legacy Lobby, an area dedicated to showcasing the history of basketball at the University of Oklahoma.
Mechanical Improvements
Several mechanical improvements will modify the Lloyd Noble Center's air handling system to comply with updated codes that require more air exchanges per hour than did codes of the early 1970's. This change reflects current research indicating the need for increased fresh air circulation for greater occupant comfort and health.
Parking Improvements
Parking and driveway improvements, which will bid as an alternate to the basic project, would add about 25 percent more parking spaces by paving the southwest quadrant of the area surrounding the Lloyd Noble Center. This work will be included in the project provided acceptable bids are received. Additionally, a new road will be constructed between the Lloyd Noble Center and Chautauqua Avenue, greatly improving access to and from the Center. Other future but currently unfunded site upgrades planned for the Center include a traffic signal at the new intersection and repairs to the existing parking lot.
