Moving Day Approaching For OU Athletics

Norman, Okla. - Moving day is almost here for much of the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department as the interior portion of the Memorial Stadium north end zone project nears completion.

Following the 2001 football season, the department's academic assistance unit and central administration moved from the stadium to temporary offices in the press box. Displaced sports relocated at various points on the campus. Beginning July 18, the return move begins.

"All of this is a major undertaking," said associate athletics director Larry Naifeh, project coordinator for the athletics department. "It has required a lot of coordination between the contractors, the architects and every member of our staff."

The move is expected to conclude when the Student Life office, which provides academic assistance to Sooner student-athletes, completes its move. That unit is the last to move to accomodate the conclusion of summer school classes.

Other than administration and academics, the renovated offices will house the sports of men's and women's tennis, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's track and field and cross country, soccer and softball.

The new space amounts to about 60,000 feet, more than half of which is allocated to academics assistance.

Much of the stadium project, including the new deck and sky suites on the east side, continues and will do so beyond the 2002 season. One facet that will be done in time for the 2002 season is all new seating throughout the stadium. All of the benches and chairbacks will be replaced with similar, but new seating prior to the home opener on Sept. 7.

The indoor workout complex east of the stadium now has its roof. The main portion of that structure could be ready as early as November. The supporting elements of that project, which include joining with the existing Mosier facility, will be ready early in the spring of 2003.

For now, the OU Athletics Ticket Office remains on the east side of the Lloyd Noble Center and it will be in that location through 2002. It will return to the stadium in 2003.

The entire construction project is being funded through private contributions.
