NORMAN, Okla. - Darren Hutchins, a sophomore in cross country and redshirt freshman on the Sooner track and field team, was named to the Verizon Academic All-America men's track and field team today. This marks the first year for track and field to have its own Academic All-America team.
His selection marks the second consecutive year for a Sooner track and field student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors. Another distance runner, Stephanie Webb, was named to the first team at-large squad in 2001.
Hutchins, who was named to the first team all-district list earlier this month, was named to the third team All-America list. To be nominated, the student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for their career. Hutchins was one of 45 student-athletes named to the list and one of five men from the Big 12 Conference to pick up the honor.
Hutchins, who has a 3.96 GPA in mathematics/biology, is from Choctaw. He was awarded the Richard V. Andree Memorial Scholarship by the Department of Mathematics at OU in May. Hutchins was named to the Big 12 All-Academic cross country team last fall and was named to the All-Academic team in track and field in May. He received special recognition from the conference for earning a 4.0 grade point average during the fall 2001 semester. He was a 2001 Jay Myers Award winner at OU and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester he has been at OU.
Hutchins ran in six of seven cross country meets during the 2001 cross country season. He had a season-best time of 22:13 in the four mile at the UTA Meet and dropped his career best in the 8K to 27:08 at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree. He ran a 33:48.8 in the 10K at the NCAA Regional to post a season best. He also ran in six of seven meets as a freshman, posting a career best in the 10K that held up through his sophomore year. He competed in the Big 12 and NCAA Regional Championships as a true freshman and again as a sophomore.
He posted a career best in the 10,000-meter run of 32:40.58 this spring. He also competed in the 1,500 and 5,000 during the track season. Hutchins finished 19th in the 10,000-meter run at the 2002 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in May.
