OU's Season Comes To An End At Hands Of Wichita State, 8-4 :: Frasier and Alexander homer, but it's not enough to top host Shockers.

WICHITA, Kan. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team couldn't overcome host Wichita State on Saturday at the NCAA Regional, falling by a score of 8-4 and bringing the 2002 season to a close. The host Shockers stormed out to a four-run lead, and after OU evened the score with a big second inning, WSU added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and cruised to the win. Oklahoma managed seven hits in the game, four of which came in the big second frame, while WSU cranked out 14 hits. The Sooners' season comes to an end with a final record of 35-27.
"It's always tough to see a season come to an end," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "But unless you're winning the national title, chances are the season will end on a down note. But this was an excellent team to coach, they really grew up as ball players and as men, and I look at this season as a success. Obviously, we wish we could've played better here in Wichita, but the nucleus is here for much success in the near future."
Evan Greusel (5-3) took the loss for OU after allowing four runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings of work. David Purcey made the start for the Sooners, but was removed from the game after allowing four runs on seven hits over just an inning and two-thirds. The freshman lefty struck out three and walked two Shockers. Adam Peterson (8-3) earned the win for Wichita State, pitching 6.2 innings and surrendering four runs on six hits. Justin Maureau picked up his third save of the season, throwing two innings and a third, giving up just one run. Luke Alexander led the Sooners offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Wichita State got off to a roaring start in the first inning as leadoff man Dustin Hawkins hit a home run to center field, giving the Shockers a 1-0 lead. In the second, WSU loaded the bases with no outs and scored three runs to go up 4-0. The Shockers plated two runs on a single up the middle by Brian Burgamy and another on a Drew Moffitt base hit.
Oklahoma, however, stormed back to even the score at four with two home runs in the bottom of the second frame. Charlie Frasier opened the inning by drilling a solo home run over the center field wall, his 12th on the season. Chris Jakubauskas and Spencer Wyman then both hit singles and advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Bose. OU designated hitter Alexander then brought both men home with a towering three-run home run to center, his eighth round-tripper in this, his first season as a Sooner.
In the fourth, Wichita State went back ahead when Burgamy ripped a two-run triple to the right field wall and the Shockers extended their lead to four with a two-run home run by Tanner Welch in the fifth.
Oklahoma's season ends with a 35-27 record, a fourth place finish in the rugged Big 12 Conference and a trip to its first NCAA Regional since hosting in Oklahoma City in 2000.
