OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Behind the power hitting of junior left fielder Jason Fransz, Oklahoma topped Oklahoma State 5-2 on Friday night at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jason Fransz ripped a two-run home run to left to give the Sooners a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Oklahoma added another insurance run in the inning and in the ninth, Curtis White retired three Cowboys in order to close out the game. White (1-2) picked up his first win as a Sooner after pitching two perfect innings of relief. Oklahoma improved to 32-23 on the season, 14-12 in Big 12 play, while OSU fell to 37-18 (13-12 Big 12).
"This was a very big win for us, especially after last night," said Oklahoma head coach, referring to Thursday night's heart-breaking 11-7 loss in 14 innings of play. "David Purcey pitched outstanding tonight and it was hard to take him out. Curtis White came in and did an excellent job for the second night in a row, and what can you say about Jason Fransz? His home run was the biggest hit of the ballgame, obviously, and maybe the season. There was a great atmosphere here tonight, and we need to come out tomorrow with the same kind of intensity to try to win this series."
David Purcey started the game for Oklahoma, threw 118 pitches in seven innings and surrendered two runs -- one earned -- while striking out seven and walking a career-high six. Fransz's home run was his team-high 14th on the season and his second in as many games against Oklahoma State, and he now leads the Sooners with 52 runs batted in. Eddie Cornejo went 2-for-4 to extend his season-long hitting streak to 11 games and freshman Matt Bose went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the game.
Oklahoma State led off the scoring with two runs -- one earned -- in the second inning, but OU scored twice in the bottom of the third to even the score at two. Matt Fisher doubled down the right field line to bring Matt Bose home, giving him his first RBI since OU's win over Western Illinois on March 13. Cornejo then roped an RBI base hit to center field, plating Fisher.
In the eighth, Cornejo singled to center field and scored on Fransz's blast off of OSU starter Chris Reilly (6-3). Then after singles by Frasier and Chris Jakubauskas, Ryan Richardson ripped a base hit to right field, which brought Frasier home to seal the OU win.
Attendance at the ballgame was 9,028, the second largest crowd to see the Sooners play this season, behind Thursday night's 10,703 at the OU-OSU game in Tulsa.
OU and OSU will play the rubber match of this year's edition of the Bedlam Series on Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest at the SBC Bricktown Ballpark. Both teams will then head to Arlington, Texas, to take part in the 2002 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Tournament, to be held at The Ballpark in Arlington.
