NORMAN, Okla. - The Big 12 Conference honored 50 student-athletes to the 2002 Baseball Academic All-Big 12 Team on Wednesday, and four Oklahoma Sooners were recognized for their outstanding achievement in the classroom. Senior Rocky Cherry (Coppell, Texas) and sophomore Buddy Blair (Tulsa, Okla.) were named to the first-team, while seniors Heith Gadient (Rock Island, Ill.) and Evan Greusel (Diamond Bar, Calif.) garnered second-team accolades.
Cherry, a construction science major, is making his fourth consecutive appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 team, making him one of only three student-athletes in the league to be recognized in each of his four academic years. Greusel is also a repeat member of the prestigious group, being named to the first team in 2001 and to the honorable mention list in 1999.
Blair has excelled as a business major since he set foot on OU's campus, however since freshmen are not eligible for the Academic All-Big 12 team, is being honored for the first time. Gadient, a sociology major, compiled a 4.0 GPA during the Fall semester of 2001.
Student-athletes were nominated by each conference institution's director of academic services and the respective media relations offices. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2-or-better grade point average, while the second team are those who have a GPA of 3.0 to 3.19.
