WICHITA, Kan. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team fell to No. 9 Wichita State 5-1 Monday night at WSU's Eck Stadium. OU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Wichita State got outstanding pitching and scored five unanswered runs to take the win. OU attempted to mount a rally in the ninth, putting runners on first and third with one out, but two strikeouts ended any hopes for a Sooner comeback. Michael Bradbury (3-2) was handed the loss for the Sooners, going 3.2 innings, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and striking out three. Oklahoma fell to 31-22 with the defeat.
Wichita State improved to 40-12 with the victory and continued an incredible streak of 25 consecutive seasons of winning 40-or-more games. Mathew Jakubov (3-1) earned the win for WSU, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on six hits, striking out three and walking none.
Curtis White pitched effectively in relief for OU, surrendering just one hit over 2.2 innings pitched. Evan Greusel made the 79th appearance of his Sooner career, extending his school record, and Charlie Frasier went 2-for-3 in the ball game with a run scored.
Frasier led off the second inning with a ground rule double to right field -- OU's first ground rule double of the season -- and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, scored on a Luke Alexander groundout. Wichita State evened the score at one when Tanner Welch singled home Randy Walter in the bottom of the second.
The Shockers went ahead 4-1 with three runs on five hits in the fourth inning. WSU's Mark Johnson led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Logan Sorensen. Welch hit his second single of the game and Ryan Owen drew a walk to load the bases, then Dustin Hawkins and Brandon Green each hit singles to bring home runs. Oklahoma then inserted White, who retired two Shockers in order to get out of the bases-loaded jam.
Wichita State added another run in the seventh to make it 5-1. After Brian Burgamy singled and stole second base, a controversial rundown play occurred in which the second base umpire determined that Burgamy was never tagged out after a lengthy pickle play. The WSU second baseman, who hails from Lawton, Okla., then scored on a Walter base hit up the middle.
Denver Kitch singled to lead off the OU half of the eighth frame, but WSU reliever Justin Maureau retired three Sooners in a row to get out of the inning. Oklahoma then put runners on first and third base in the ninth, but Maureau struck out pinch hitters Brandon Jones and Ryan Richardson to end the game.
Attendance at Eck Stadium was 6,613, the largest of the season for Wichita State and the second-highest to see the Sooners play this season, behind the crowd of 7,012 that Texas A&M drew on March 23. OU won that contest, 9-8.
Oklahoma will now battle cross-state rival Oklahoma State in the BOk Bedlam Series. The games, all three of which will start with 7 p.m. first pitches, will be played Thursday night in Tulsa's Driller Stadium and on Friday and Saturday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The Bedlam series will be crucial in determining seedings for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament on May 22-26 at The Ballpark in Arlingron, to which the Sooners clinched a bid over the weekend.
