LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma dropped the second end of the Saturday doubleheader to Kansas, 4-1, ending a season-long six game win streak. The Jayhawks took an early lead and after OU tied the game at one in the fifth inning, Kansas scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the seventh to earn the win. David Purcey (4-4) made the start for OU, went five innings, surrendered three runs on five hits, struck out a career high eight and walked five, also his most as a Sooner. Oklahoma fell to 31-20 with the loss, 12-11 in Big 12 play.
"I was disappointed in the way we played in the second game today," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We came out and did well in the first game, and got a big win. Buddy Blair was excellent in that game. It was sort of an odd situation, completing the game from last night, but we didn't play anywhere near as well as we could in the second game. We had chances, but we didn't get it done."
Evan Greusel pitched three innings of relief for OU, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. The appearance gave him the 79th of his career, the most in Oklahoma history. The senior from Diamond Bar, Calif., entered today's game tied with teammate Rocky Cherry with 78 appearances. Reggie Willits had three hits and OU's only run scored in the game. Eddie Cornejo and Denver Kitch each had two hits, with the sophomore shortstop stealing his 28th base of the season, good for second in the Big 12.
Kansas struck first when Ryan Baty drove in a run in the bottom of the first and held the lead until the fifth inning when Jason Fransz hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Reggie Willits and tie the game at one.
KU went back ahead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, which came on a Ryan Baty RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Klocksien. KU first baseman Kevin Wheeler hit an RBI single to center in the seventh to make it 4-1, Kansas.
Kitch singled in the ninth, but KU's Chris Smart shut down the Sooners and picked up his third save of the season. Tom Gorzelanny (3-6) earned the win for Kansas, going six innings and allowing just one unearned run on five hits.
Oklahoma and Kansas will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Austin Mix (5-5) will make the start for the Sooners in the series rubber match. OU will then travel to Wichita, Kan., and battle the No. 10 Wichita State Shockers on Monday at 7 p.m. The game had been scheduled as a tentative make-up game and since both teams can play an extra game under the NCAA's 56-game rule, the contest will take place.
