NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team topped McNeese State by a score of 4-2 on Wednesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Oklahoma improved to 26-20 with the win and readies itself for a crucial Big 12 series against Kansas State. Michael Bradbury (3-1) made the start for the Sooners and pitched 4.2 innings, surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and struck out three en route to the win. Austin Mix pitched effectively, going 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit, and Curtis White got a Cowboy to ground into a game-ending double play to pick up his second save.
"I was happy with our play tonight," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We had 10 hits, which is always nice, and I thought our pitching was very good. I liked the way Michael Bradbury pitched and Austin Mix just keeps getting better for us. This is a nice win and it gives us a good feeling going into this weekend's pivotal series with Kansas State.
Evan Greusel pitched an inning and a third and gave up just one hit. It was the 77th appearance of his Sooner career, putting him just one game shy of teammate Rocky Cherry's school-record of 78 appearances. Reggie Willits had two RBI and Matt Bose and Eddie Cornejo each registered two hits in the contest.
McNeese State took an early lead with two unearned runs in the second inning, but Oklahoma went ahead for good with three tallies in the bottom of the third. Reggie Willits ripped a two-run base hit and after the Sooners loaded the bases, Jason Fransz reached on a fielder's choice which scored a run to make it 3-2, OU.
Eddie Cornejo led off the fifth inning with a triple to the gap in left center and scored on a Luke Alexander sacrifice fly to give the Sooners their final 4-2 cushion.
McNeese State put runners on first and second base with no outs in the top of the ninth inning, but a failed sacrifice bunt attempt made one out and White came in to finish the Cowboys off, getting MSU's Seth LaStrapes to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.
Oklahoma turned three double plays, one in the first, one in the third frame and then the game-ender in the ninth.
The Sooners' next action will be this weekend as they return to Big 12 action against Kansas State in a crucial, three-game series. Oklahoma and the Wildcats are currently tied for eighth in the conference, each with 8-10 league marks. Game times are set for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Oklahoma baseball program will hold Senior Day on Sunday, honoring the seven departing senior members of the squad.
