Oklahoma Falls To Tech In Game Two Of Saturday Doubleheader :: Fransz belts team-high 10th home run, but Sooners fall 9-4.

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Oklahoma baseball team dropped the second end of a Saturday doubleheader with Texas Tech by a score of 9-4. The Red Raiders took an early 4-0 lead and seemingly had answers for everything Oklahoma could muster, and then some. OU scored two runs in both the fourth and seventh frames, however Tech answered with two and three runs of its own in both of the ensuing innings.
"We just didn't play good baseball today," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We didn't make the plays we needed to, not at the plate, in the field and on the mound. I'm disappointed in the way we played, but hopefully we can come out tomorrow and win one."
David Purcey (2-2) pitched five innings for the Sooners, struck out three and allowed six runs in a losing effort. Nathan Fouts (7-5) earned the win for Texas Tech, pitching seven innings and surrendering four OU runs on six hits, while fanning four. Jarod McAuliff pitched three innings in relief for Oklahoma and struck out three Red Raiders.
Texas Tech took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning and after loading the bases on two separate occasions in the third, scored three more runs to go up by four.
OU got on the board with two tallies in the fourth inning as Luke Alexander led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-bagger down the right field line by Chris Jakubauskas. Jakubauskas, whose start at first base was the first of the season by anyone other than Charlie Frasier, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Bose.
Tech got those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2, but OU pulled back within two when Jason Fransz ripped a two-run home run over the bullpen in left field in the seventh frame. Eddie Cornejo had walked in the at bat previous to Fransz's. The homer, which came with two outs in the inning, was Fransz's team-high 10th of the season and the RBIs were his 38th and 39th on the year, also tops on the club.
As has been the case for much of this series, however, Texas Tech answered OU's rally with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the final 9-4 margin of victory. Oklahoma did have men on first and second base with one out in the ninth inning, but couldn't manage to bring anyone home.
Eddie Cornejo went 3-for-4 in the contest with two singles, a double, a stolen base, a run scored and two walks. Oklahoma and Texas Tech will wrap up the three-game set at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Tech's Dan Law Field.
