LUBBOCK, Texas - The University of Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision to Big 12 rival Texas Tech in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Dan Law Field. Mark Roberts and Red Raider starter Steve Gooch engaged in a pitching battle for the first two innings, however Tech exploded for nine runs between the third and seventh frames and cruised to the 9-3 win. Chris Jakubauskas belted his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the ninth, however it wasn't enough to overcome the Red Raiders.

Roberts was handed his first loss of the season in Big 12 Conference play after allowing six runs on six hits over five innings and a third. Unfortunately however, the sophomore from Owasso, Okla., was forced the leave the game in the sixth inning after being hit with a line drive in the neck. He was taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons. Gooch (6-2) pitched his second complete game of the season and allowed three runs on five hits.

Texas Tech benefitted from two OU errors in the third inning and took a 1-0 lead. The Red Raiders added two more runs in the fourth inning, one coming on a sacrifice fly by Jake Brown and the other on a solo home run by Bryon Smith, a graduate of Oklahoma City's Westmoore High School.

The Raiders extended their lead to 6-0 with three runs in the fifth frame. Gera Alvarez hit a two-run double, moving him into a tie for second place in school history with a 29-game hitting streak. Nick Blankenship then grounded out to score Alvarez.

Tech added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 9-3 lead. In the ninth, Fransz doubled and scored on a Ryan Richardson base hit. Jakubauskas then ripped his home run over the center field wall.

Reggie Willits extended his season-long hitting streak to eight games with a single in the first inning. Eddie Cornejo smacked his ninth double on the season and Fransz hit his team-high-tying 15th two-bagger on the year.

Attendance at Dan Law Field was 4,784, the 12th-largest in Texas Tech school history. The second game of the doubleheader will take place tonight at 7 p.m. Oklahoma and Tech will wrap up the three-game set at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Tech's Dan Law Field.
