NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Oral Roberts with a 7-5 victory Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. David Purcey (3-2), who made his first collegiate start on April 16 versus TCU, earned his second win of the week by going seven innings, striking out a career-high eight and surrendering just three unearned runs. The Sooners took a 7-1 lead on a three-run home run by junior designated hitter Luke Alexander in the sixth inning, and held off a late ORU rally which brought the Golden Eagles to within two. Oklahoma is now 24-16 on the season, while Oral Roberts fell to 23-14 with the loss.
"We played good baseball today," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "Oral Roberts is a good baseball club and hopefully winning all three of these games will give us some momentum going back into Big 12 play next week. I thought David Purcey pitched an excellent game and the thing that most impressed me was that he finished strong. ORU loaded the bases, but he got out of the jam and is definitely part of our starting rotation now."
ORU led off the game with an unearned run in the first inning, however the Sooners answered in their half of the first with three tallies. Luke Alexander hit an RBI base hit to center and Jason Fransz scored on an error by ORU second baseman Scott Campbell. Charlie Frasier then roped a base hit up the middle to score Alexander and make the score, 3-1 OU.
Purcey struck out the side in the second inning -- all swinging -- and Oklahoma added another run in the bottom of the frame when Fransz ripped an RBI double over ORU center fielder Chad Stewart's head.
Then, in the sixth frame, Alexander's towering three-run home run to right gave the Sooners a 7-1 lead. Reggie Willits and Eddie Cornejo each singled to reach base and both scored on the homer.
ORU scored two runs in the seventh inning to make the score 7-3 OU and mounted a fierce comeback in the ninth, tallying two runs off of reliever Curtis White. However, that was all the Golden Eagles could muster.
For the second consecutive game, Oklahoma's bats were clutch in that five of the team's seven runs were scored with two outs. All six OU runs in Saturday night's 6-5 win were scored with two men down.
The Sooners return to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game versus nationally-ranked Arizona State at the SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. OU then travels to Lubbock, Texas, to face Big 12 rival Texas Tech in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 7 p.m.
