NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team fell to the UTA Mavericks by a score of 10-5 Wednesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park. UTA pounded out 15 hits and topped the Sooners for the second time this season. Reggie Willits' second homer in as many days and 12 OU hits went for naught in the losing effort. Oklahoma, which commited five errors in the game, is now 21-16 on the season, while the Mavericks improved to 20-18 with the win.
Austin Mix (4-4) took the loss for Oklahoma after pitching just inning and allowing five runs on five hits. It was the junior's second loss of the season to UTA. Michael Bradbury made the start for OU and went five innings, and allowing three runs on seven hits. Buddy Blair went three frames and despite giving up two runs, struck out three and was effective.
UTA began the game with a run in the first inning, but Willits hit his second home run of the season (and his second in the last two nights), a solo shot to left field. The switch hitter's homer was from the right side of the plate, while his dinger on Tuesday night came while batting lefthanded.
Oklahoma added two more runs in the second inning to push its go ahead 3-1. Matt Bose led off the inning with a single and the third baseman scored as Charlie Frasier drilled a double. Greg Kish then drove Frasier in with an infield groundout to give the Sooners their two-run cushion.
UTA drew one run closer with a tally in the fourth and tied the game on Daniel Ortmeier's solo home run in the fifth. The Mavericks blew the game open with a five-run sixth to take an 8-3 lead, and extended their lead to six with another tally in the seventh inning.
The Sooners tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Jones drilled a triple to the wall to bring Denver Kitch home. Kitch singled and stole second base (his 23rd steal of the year) to get into scoring position. Eddie Cornejo singled to bring Jones in and make the score 9-5. UTA rounded out the scoring with a run in the eighth.
Oklahoma is now 7-8 on the season against teams from the state of Texas. UTA defeated the Sooners by a score of 15-5 on April 2 in Arlington.
OU returns to action on Friday night with a 7 p.m. contest at J.L. Johnson Stadium, on the campus of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. OU is back home on Saturday and Sunday against ORU. Game times are set for 6:35 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
