NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team earned an important win on Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park, defeating a tough TCU team by a score of 7-3. Freshman David Purcey (2-2) notched the win in his first start as a Sooner, after pitching six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out five Horned Frogs. Reggie Willits, Luke Alexander, Ryan Richardson and Denver Kitch all homered for the Sooners, who cranked out 13 hits and improved to 21-15 on the season with the win. TCU, currently tied for the lead in Conference USA, fell to 20-18.
"This was an important win for us, against a good ball club in TCU," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "Every win is important, but hopefully this one can get us going down the stretch. (David) Purcey had an outstanding game and the ceiling on his potential is just so high. I was happy with his performance tonight. Brandon Jones made his first start tonight as well, and did a nice job. He's a phenomenal athlete who just needs to see live pitching in game situations."
TCU took an early lead with a run in the third, but Oklahoma evened the score with a solo home run to right field by Willits. The junior switch hitter's homer was his first as a Sooner and came from the left side of the plate.
OU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning as Charlie Frasier grounded out to score Jason Fransz. Fransz led off the inning with a double to deep center field and advanced to third on a base hit by Ryan Richardson. The Sooners left men on second and third base in the inning, however.
In the fifth, Willits singled to lead off the inning, then designated hitter Alexander drilled a two-run home run to left field to push OU's lead to 4-1. Alexander's homer, which he hit the opposite way, was his fourth on the year. OU tallied two more runs in the seventh as Richardson blasted his seventh dinger of the season over the center field wall. It was his third home run in the last three contests.
TCU tallied a run in the eighth inning, but Kitch hit his second homer of the season in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to five. The Horned Frogs tallied a run in the ninth to end the scoring.
Oklahoma is now 7-7 on the season against teams from the state of Texas, and looks to add to that figure as Texas-Arlington visits Norman Wednesday night for a 6:30 p.m. contest. It will be the second meeting between the schools, as UTA defeated OU by a score of 15-5 on April 2 in Arlington.
